Two College Students Drown in Dahisar Quarry After Skipping Classes for Swim
Two first-year Commerce students drowned after skipping college and swimming in an abandoned quarry in Dahisar East, Mumbai. Despite rescue efforts by friends, local residents, the fire brigade, and police, both were declared deceased. Authorities have registered Accidental Death Reports and warned about the dangers of water-filled quarry pits during the monsoon.
According to the police, Om Singh, a resident of Santacruz, and Piyush Gupta, who lived in Kandivali, had skipped college along with their classmates, 17-year-old Aman Giri and 17-year-old Divyesh Patel. The four first-year Commerce students from a degree college in Kandivali travelled to Shaikh Khadaan Compound near Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Dahisar East for a swim.
At approximately 10.20 a.m., Singh and Gupta entered the deeper section of the water while Aman Giri and Divyesh Patel remained near the edge of the quarry. Soon after, Singh and Gupta began struggling to breathe and were unable to return to safety.
Police said their friends attempted to rescue them by throwing their college bags into the water so the pair could hold on and be pulled back to the shore. However, the effort failed. One of the students immediately contacted the police control room to seek emergency assistance.
Police personnel and the fire brigade reached the scene shortly after receiving the alert. With the assistance of local residents, rescue teams retrieved Singh and Gupta from the quarry and rushed them to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital. Doctors examined both students and declared them deceased.
The Dahisar Police Station registered Accidental Death Reports in connection with the incident and initiated further legal formalities.
Police officials said the abandoned quarry pits become particularly dangerous during the monsoon, as they can accumulate between 30 and 40 feet of water. While local residents are aware of the risk and generally avoid the area, officers noted that young people from outside the locality frequently visit the quarry for swimming during the rainy season, often unaware of the life-threatening conditions.
The incident has once again highlighted the deadly dangers posed by abandoned water-filled quarries during the monsoon and the tragic consequences of entering deep water without swimming skills or awareness of the hazards.
